Nobel Peace laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu said on Monday that the United States government must be more open to discussions with Iran if it wants peace between the nations. Tutu criticised the George Bush’s administration for refusing to engage in more negotiations with Iranian officials.

South Africa is placed fifth on the latest Mo Ibrahim Foundation Index of African Governance with a score of 71,2 while top-ranking Mauritius scored 86,2. The index rated the performance of 48 nations against a series of criteria including security, human rights, economic stability, just laws, free elections, corruption, infrastructure, poverty and health.

The wife of former Australian cricket champion Shane Warne says their marriage reconciliation is over after he mistakenly sent her an incriminating SMS. Simone Callahan, who reunited last December with the spin bowler known also for his womanising, told a woman’s magazine she caught Warne cheating on her while he was in London.

Last week, at the Gauteng launch of its reborn Uno, Fiat kicked off proceedings by setting us loose on a section of the Carnival City casino off-road route. This seemed a little strange until we heard that the Italian company now includes a raised-body version of the Brazilian-built hatch in its line-up, intended to make it more suitable for those pesky African and South American dirt roads.

The JSE had given up most of its early gains by midday on Tuesday, but was still in positive territory as resources and the platinum mining index tried to lift the local bourse. By noon, the JSE’s all-share index had added 0,18%. The platinum mining index had firmed 1,93% and resources rose 0,69%.

Hundreds of monks marched towards central Yangon on Tuesday in defiance of a threat by Burma’s ruling generals to send soldiers in to end the biggest anti-junta protests in 20 years. About 2Â 000 monks and ordinary people marched out of the Shwedagon Pagoda, the former Burma’s holiest shrine and the symbolic heart of a growing campaign against 45 years of unbroken military rule.
