More than 100 Bangladeshi fishermen were missing after at least 15 fishing boats sank in a storm in the Bay of Bengal, witnesses and officials said on Sunday. The Chittagong port authority issued an international maritime alert advising all ships and fishing boats to remain in shelters until further notice.

Japan’s ruling party on Sunday picked Yasuo Fukuda, who seeks warmer ties with Asian neighbours, to succeed Shinzo Abe as prime minister in an effort to revive the party’s fortunes and fill a political vacuum. Fukuda will be chosen as prime minister on Tuesday by virtue of the ruling camp’s huge majority in Parliament’s Lower House.

The supervisor of a major HIV vaccine trial in South Africa voiced ”huge disappointment” on Saturday after testing was halted in the wake of poor results from sister trials in Australia and the United States. US pharmaceutical giant Merck announced on Friday that it had halted the trials of its V520 vaccine.

A school pupil was stabbed and killed after an argument with another pupil during an end-of-term outing in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape police said on Saturday. Pupils from the Thembelihle High School had gathered at Kings Beach to celebrate the end of the school term on Friday when an argument broke out.

Madagascans vote on Sunday for the Indian Ocean island’s Parliament, with President Marc Ravalomanana’s party tipped to continue its domination of the Assembly. Ravalomanana dissolved Parliament in July, saying it no longer reflected national representation after a new Constitution was passed in April.

A seat belt saved the life of a prospective groom who lost control of his Jeep on the way back from his stag party in Johannesburg in the early hours of Sunday, said ER24. Spokesperson Riana Beech said the vehicle rolled several times on the N1 south, just after the Beyers Naude off-ramp, at about 3am.
