Mbeki’s E Cape tour ends on positive note

President Thabo Mbeki wrapped up his two-day imbizo in the Eastern Cape on a positive note after interacting with stakeholders, communities and different spheres of government. Spokesperson Mukoni Ratshitanga said Mbeki was particularly pleased with the support the Ukhahlamba district gave to a R1,5-billion PG Bison Project.

Fatigue cripples US army in Iraq

Lieutenant Clay Hanna looks sick and white. Like his colleagues he does not seem to sleep. Hanna says he catches up by napping on a cot between operations in the command centre, amid the noise of radio. He is up at 6am and tries to go to sleep by 2am or 3am. But there are operations to go on, planning to be done and after-action reports that need to be written.

DRC army halts operations against Rwandan rebels

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has suspended Tutsi-led military operations against Rwandan Hutu rebels in an effort to avoid further ethnic tension in the country’s troubled east, a senior army official said on Saturday. At least 165 000 civilians have fled fighting in DRC’s North Kivu province since February.

Pinochet’s suits on sale … to supporters only

Clothes of the late Augusto Pinochet are on sale at a central Santiago tailor’s shop, but only to customers identified as the Chilean dictator’s supporters, local media reported on Saturday. About 20 pieces of Pinochet’s wardrobe are on sale at D’Adriany tailor, mainly suits and jackets he wore between 1980 and last year when he died, his elder son Augusto Pinochet Hiriart said.

Observers satisfied with Sierra Leone polls

Ballot-counting was under way on Sunday across Sierra Leone after the West African country voted in presidential and parliamentary elections seen as a test of whether it has fully emerged from its decade-long civil war. Voting was peaceful, although some polling stations opened late and many people had to wait in long lines in the rain.

A year or two ago, an old friend of mine, Jones, was sitting in her home when she heard the sound of a coconut hitting concrete. Intrigued, she wandered outside. Her house borders Steurhof station in Cape Town’s southern suburbs, and, hearing a commotion, she peered over her wall.

Province scrape home against Griquas

Leading 22-15 at half-time, Western Province, in spite of trailing 25-22 for all of 22 minutes during the second half, squeezed home 30-25 in a closely fought Currie Cup fixture played in Kimberley on Saturday. Scoring their match-winning and bonus-point-earning fourth try with 10 minutes remaining, Province returned home with a full-house five points.
