1time Holdings on Thursday reported a 91% surge in headline earnings per share to 6,7 cents for the six months ended June from 3,5 cents a year ago. In line with its strategy to reinvest in the group in order to sustain growth, no dividend has been declared. Attributable earnings grew by 27% to R12-million.

Tuareg rebels fired at a United States military plane dropping provisions to Malian troops in the north of the African country, but did not hit it, a US diplomatic source said here on Thursday. ”Our plane was shot at … but there was no damage,” the source said, adding that the plane completed its mission and returned to the Malian capital, Bamako.

Hurricane Humberto blasted across south-east Texas on Thursday as it headed toward Louisiana, packing strong winds and triggering fears of flooding, United States forecasters said. Humberto emerged as a tropical storm over the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday and mushroomed into a hurricane moments before slamming ashore.

Indonesia’s Sumatra island was pounded by aftershocks on Thursday after a massive earthquake toppled hundreds of buildings, killing at least 10 people and burying many others in the wreckage. A separate earthquake was reported at about 10am GMT off Indonesia’s Sulawesi island, to the east of Sumatra.

Somalia’s government on Thursday said a new opposition movement vowing war on Ethiopian troops in the Horn of Africa nation was a ”terrorist alliance” posing no real threat. Somali opposition figures forged the Alliance for the Liberation of Somalia on Wednesday in a move analysts said may boost Islamist-led insurgents fighting the interim government.

Three men convicted of raping three Durban women at a beach house on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast were on Thursday sentenced to five life sentences each in the Scottburgh High Court. Sithembiso Shelembe (23), Mthokozisi Mbambo (30) and Wonder Mchunu (27) will only be considered for parole after 25 years.

James McFadden’s long-range goal earned Scotland a landmark 1-0 victory over France on Wednesday night to put them firmly on course for the Euro 2008 finals on a winning night for Britain.
