Uganda on Tuesday for the first time closed a camp housing people displaced by civil war in the north, a symbolic step in the country’s drive to restore stability after two decades of conflict. The deserted Otwal camp — which was home to 18 000 people — was closed by demolishing huts and planting trees.

Microsoft released four software patches on Tuesday to fix security flaws, including one that could allow hackers to take over computers running the company’s instant messaging programs. Only one of the flaws carried the company’s most severe ”critical” rating, and it only applies to the Windows 2000 operating system.

The head of Microsoft’s gaming business in Japan promised more role-playing game software on Wednesday to attract fans in a market where its Xbox 360 console has struggled against offerings from Nintendo and Sony. Takashi Sensui, who heads Xbox operations in Japan, said Japanese prefer role-playing games.

Oil prices slipped on Wednesday after finishing at a record close in the previous session on worries about tight supplies. Light, sweet crude for October delivery fell six cents to ,17 a barrel in Asian electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange by late afternoon in Singapore.

Nasa’s Mars rovers Opportunity and Spirit have resumed their three-year-old mission after surviving giant dust storms that nearly destroyed the twin robots, the United States space agency said. The rovers had been placed in hibernation mode in July to protect them from the Martian dust storms.

Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson is scheduled for a hearing this month in which he could change his plea in a narcotics case. The 41-year-old boxer previously pleaded not guilty to charges of drug possession and driving under the influence of drugs. A spokesperson for Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas wouldn’t comment on any possible plea agreement.
