There are no plans to exclude white women from employment-equity policies, Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana said on Wednesday. He was addressing the Food and Allied Workers’ Union national conference under way in Randburg, Johannesburg, and commended the union on its conference theme.

Eight inmates of a prison in south-west Nigeria were killed in an attempted jail break, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported on Tuesday. The NAN quoted Oyo state controller of prisons Mauren Omeli as saying 14 inmates and four wardens of Agodi prison in Ibadan were also seriously injured during the attempt.

Uganda on Tuesday for the first time closed a camp housing people displaced by civil war in the north, a symbolic step in the country’s drive to restore stability after two decades of conflict. The deserted Otwal camp — which was home to 18 000 people — was closed by demolishing huts and planting trees.

The dollar plunged to a record low against the euro on Wednesday as an expected interest-rate cut next week from the Federal Reserve has dampened the United States currency’s appeal. The dollar also dropped to a fresh 15-year trough against a basket of currencies.

Microsoft released four software patches on Tuesday to fix security flaws, including one that could allow hackers to take over computers running the company’s instant messaging programs. Only one of the flaws carried the company’s most severe ”critical” rating, and it only applies to the Windows 2000 operating system.

The head of Microsoft’s gaming business in Japan promised more role-playing game software on Wednesday to attract fans in a market where its Xbox 360 console has struggled against offerings from Nintendo and Sony. Takashi Sensui, who heads Xbox operations in Japan, said Japanese prefer role-playing games.

Oil prices slipped on Wednesday after finishing at a record close in the previous session on worries about tight supplies. Light, sweet crude for October delivery fell six cents to ,17 a barrel in Asian electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange by late afternoon in Singapore.

Somali Islamist leader Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys dismissed United States terrorism allegations against him and instead blamed Washington for instability in the Horn of Africa, in an interview published on Wednesday. ”The US cannot present any concrete evidence for its unfounded accusations,” Aweys said.
