Reformed Hard Livings gang leader Rashied Staggie was on Wednesday found not guilty of the revenge murder of taxi driver Mogamat Ryklief. Staggie appeared in the Cape High Court before Judge Nathan Erasmus, who labelled the only state witness, Donavan Richards, as a ”good liar who manipulated words to suit himself”.

South Africa’s most wanted ATM suspect has been linked to nine ATM bombings across the country so far, police said on Wednesday. Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said he had been linked to nine bombings in areas including Vereeniging and Soweto in Gauteng and northern KwaZulu-Natal.

The boom in cellphones in developing countries has pushed the number of telephone subscribers in the world to four billion, four times the number a decade ago, the United Nations telecommunications agency said on Tuesday. The increase has been especially strong in developing countries such as Brazil, China and India.

Japanese electronics maker Casio said on Wednesday it will launch a series of digital cameras specially designed for YouTube, the blockbuster video-sharing website. The new Exilim series has four models, all installed with a function to shoot and save videos in the best form to upload on YouTube, the company said.

Pakistan’s Supreme Court began hearing legal challenges to President Pervez Musharraf’s rule on Wednesday, adding to the woes the embattled United States ally faces as he prepares to secure another term. The Arctic ice cap has collapsed at an unprecedented rate recently and levels of sea ice in the region now stand at a record low, scientists said on Tuesday night. Experts said they were ”stunned” by the loss of ice, with an area almost twice as big as Britain disappearing in the last week alone.

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon arrived in the Darfur region of western Sudan on Wednesday, promising to step up pressure for a political solution to the festering conflict. Ban told journalists he would push for progress in peace talks between the Sudanese government and rebel groups.

Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame said on Wednesday that his country was no longer interested in joining the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in order to avoid ”overlapping” roles with other blocs. ”As a country we need to rationalise on which organisations to join in order to avoid overlaps,” he told journalists.
