Internet search leader Google has begun hosting material produced by the Associated Press and three other news services on its own website instead of only sending readers to other destinations. The change that started last Friday affects hundreds of stories and photographs distributed each day.

The world’s top platinum producer, Angloplat, launched a R35-billion black economic empowerment (BEE) deal on Tuesday to sell mines to two black-led firms and hand out shares to its mostly black workers. The deals will forge two new major players in South Africa’s platinum sector, the world’s largest, and burnish credentials of Angloplat.

White women should be struck off a list of groups recognised as previously disadvantaged in terms of the employment equity legislation, the Black Management Forum said on Tuesday. In its written submission, the forum requested that the current employment equity legislation be amended to exclude white women as beneficiaries.

The extent of illegal border crossings from Zimbabwe into South Africa has been exaggerated, according to a migration-studies report released on Tuesday. The report said: ”Recent statements by officials and media reports exaggerated the numbers of Zimbabweans moving across into South Africa or already in the country.”

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon flew in to south Sudan’s capital, Juba, on Tuesday to try to speed implementation of the 2005 peace deal that ended Africa’s longest civil war. Aides said Ban would try to resolve sticking points in the roll-out of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

At least 60 renegade soldiers have been killed by the regular army in a fresh attack in the restive east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), government forces said on Tuesday. The army said it used a helicopter gunship to attack rebel soldiers loyal to cashiered general Laurent Nkunda.

A South African court sentenced a German man to 18 years in prison on Tuesday but suspended the jail term after he pleaded guilty in a case involving a global black market in atomic weapons technology. Gerhard Wisser, an engineer living in South Africa, was accused of having ties to a network run by Abdul Qadeer Khan.

Representatives from Sunni and Shia groups in Iraq agreed on a road map to peace based on the experience in Northern Ireland after four days of secret talks in Finland. The meeting brought together 16 delegates from the feuding groups to study lessons learned from successful peacemaking efforts in South Africa and Northern Ireland.
