Wanted Taliban leader killed in raid

A wanted Taliban insurgent leader in Afghanistan, Mullah Brother, was killed on Thursday in a United States-led raid in the southern province of Helmand, the Afghan Defence Ministry said, citing ground commanders. Brother served as a top military commander for the Taliban government until its removal from power in 2001.

Italian cops arrest 40 over German mafia deaths

Italian police on Thursday arrested 40 suspected Mafiosi at the centre of a mob feud police blame for the execution-style killings of six Italians in Germany. Camouflage-clad police backed by helicopters swooped into the southern Italian mountain village of San Luca, the epicentre of a 16-year-old feud inside the Calabrian underworld organisation.

DA withdraws complaint against Mbeki

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has withdrawn its request to the Public Protector to investigate whether President Thabo Mbeki intervened to assure a liver transplant for Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang. Party leader Helen Zille said on Thursday she made the decision after meeting Mbeki earlier in the week.

Rebels accuse govt of bombing Darfur

Darfur rebels accused the government of bombing South Darfur on Thursday, the latest attack in an aerial campaign that has driven thousands of people from their homes over the past month. ”There is aerial bombardment on a daily basis — bombing by MiG 29 and by Antonov,” Justice and Equality Movement commander Abel Aziz el-Nur Ashr Ashr said.

Japanese inmates pass on getting high

Inmates at a major Japanese prison found marijuana growing naturally on the grounds, but instead of getting high, they went to the wardens. The prisoners found about 300 hemp shoots growing on the exercise ground of Abashiri Prison, located on Japan’s northern-most island of Hokkaido, Jiji Press and the <i>Yomiuri Shimbun</i> said.

UN official warns of militarised Darfur camps

Camps teeming with frustrated refugees in Sudan’s Darfur region have become militarised and present a danger that cannot be ignored, a United Nations official was quoted as saying on Thursday. The UN’s emergency relief coordinator said the presence of weapons in the camps made for a potentially explosive situation.
