Els, Goosen struggle in China

France’s Raphael Jacquelin shot a six-under-par 66 to take a one-stroke lead over Denmark’s Soren Kjeldsen after the first round of the ,3-million Asian Open on Thursday. Eight-time European number one Colin Montgomerie finished three behind after a patient round of 69, while two-time US Open champions Ernie Els and Retief Goosen finished five off the pace with a pair of one-under 71s.

Labour inspectors shut down their own offices

Labour offices in Nelspruit in Mpumalanga were shut down by their own inspectors after being found to pose a serious health hazard to workers, the Department of Labour said on Thursday. A notice halting all the activities was issued on Tuesday. A department spokesperson said inspectors found that the building had a water leak in the ceiling.

Hostage drama in Cape Town

Police have confirmed that a senior Human Rights Commission official was held hostage at the organisation’s offices in the Absa Bank building in Cape Town on Thursday. Captain Elliot Sinyangana said police were still investigating the cause of the incident. ”It was a Human Rights Commission official who was held hostage. It seems as if there was a dispute about pension,” he said.

Malik named as new Pakistan captain

The Pakistan Cricket Board has named all-rounder Shoaib Malik as captain of the national team following the resignation of Inzamam-ul-Haq in the wake of the side’s early World Cup exit. The 25-year-old, who has played in 18 Tests and 137 one-day internationals, was handed the role until the end of the year for the Test and one-day squads.
