Italian firms sue SA over mining law

The Italian owners of two granite firms are suing South Africa for â,¬266-million (about R2,5-billion), arguing that laws which force firms to sell stakes to black investors violated international investment treaties, the investors’ lawyer said on Friday. The action marks the first legal action alleging that South Africa’s mining charter amounts to expropriation.

Highlanders ensure Reds stay in the cellar

The Otago Highlanders ran in four tries to two on Friday to beat the Queensland Reds 33-17 and ensure they remained marooned at the bottom of the Super14 rugby competition. After a rough tour to South Africa early in the series, the Highlanders made the most of the home advantage at Carisbrook’s ”House of Pain”.

Uncertain JSE drifts weaker

The JSE was slightly weaker in noon trade on Friday, taking its cue from its European counterparts. With key United States non-farm payrolls and trade data both due out at 3.30pm, caution was the order of the day. By 12.01pm, the all-share index shed 0,19%. Industrials dipped 0,1%, while the financial and banks indices fell 0,53% and 1,2% respectively.

Banyana Banyana, the South African women’s national football team, will have two goals when they trot on to the pitch for their match against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday. They will be hoping to nullify the heartbreaking 2-1 loss to the West Africans in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, during the first leg last month. And they will attempt to gain the respect they believe they deserve.

Greek Cypriots dismantle symbol of division

Greek Cypriots razed to the ground a symbol of Cyprus’s decades-old division running through the heart of the capital Nicosia and challenged Turkey to respond by withdrawing its troops from the area. Demolition work on a concrete barrier in Nicosia’s Ledra Street ceased by dawn on Friday, exposing a corridor of crumbling buildings untouched for decades.
