Women’s league faces its demons

The African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) has been hard hit by neglected branches, failed recruitment strategies, unstable provincial leadership and inadequate resources, says league secretary general Bathabile Dlamini. In a frank report presented to the women’s league, Dlamini also lambasted the league’s leaders for not fulfilling their official responsibilities.

‘A helping hand of equals’

Rape case bungled

Insult has been added to injury for the 24-year-old woman who survived a horrific gang rape in a cell at the Volksrust police station last month. First the prosecution of the police on duty that night was bungled by poor investigation, now she is being forced to pay a R50 fine for public drunkenness.

‘See nothing’ cops suspended over rape in cell

The two police constables who were on duty at Volksrust police station in Mpumalanga when a 24-year-old woman was gang raped after being locked up in a cell with six men, have been suspended. “The acting provincial police commissioner signed their suspensions yesterday [Tuesday] and they were effective immediately,” said Mpumalanga Senior Superintendent Sibongile Nkosi.

Problem-stricken feeding scheme

One million underprivileged school children in the Eastern Cape, who should be benefiting from the School Nutrition Programme, are now at the mercy of the provincial department of education, which has temp­orarily suspended the programme amid allegations of R100-million in irregular tender awards.
