World drowns in dead microchips

The United Nations is tackling the growing problem of "e-waste" in the developing world, according to a report on the Science and Development Network website. Discarded electronic equipment can contaminate soil and water, and is a growing problem in developing countries as IT becomes increasingly popular.

Sony unveils virtual universe for PS3

Sony has unveiled plans for its own virtual universe for the PlayStation 3 where users will be able to socialise, shop and even go to the movies — all without setting foot outside in the real world. The free service, called <i>Home</i>, will allow PS3 users to set up an apartment for life-like virtual characters, or avatars, which can invite friends or strangers over.

Too heavy a load

A recent study done by the department of occupational therapy at the University of the Free State investigated the spinal deviation of children in grade 5 and compared those who carry school bags with those who don’t. The results showed postural deviation in children who carry bags, especially if they are not carrying them properly.
