SA tourism gets boost from BBC World

South African Tourism (SAT) has signed a deal with BBC World to promote the country as a destination for international tourists, it was announced on Thursday. The electronic marketing campaign will take place from February to July and will consist of advertisements, commercial presentations and online marketing in Europe, the United States and Africa, SAT said in a statement.

Cosatu gives backing to land minister

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) on Thursday welcomed Minister of Agriculture and Land Affairs Lulu Xingwana’s pledge to tackle the abuse of farm workers. ”We fully share the minister’s concern about the evictions and … the inhumane treatment and abuse of farm workers,” said Cosatu spokesperson Patrick Craven.

‘Mugabe should step down now’

Zimbabwe’s main opposition party staged a protest on Thursday against President Robert Mugabe’s plan to extend his rule by two years to 2010. Hundreds of provincial and district leaders of the Movement for Democratic Change marched through Bulawayo, witnesses said, marking the first major public protest over Mugabe’s leadership proposal.

Sudan charges US with seeking to topple regime

Sudan accused Washington of seeking to overthrow the regime of President Omar al-Bashir by using rights groups and foreign powers, a top presidential adviser was quoted as saying on Thursday. "The new American strategy for dismantling the Sudanese government from within is based on inciting international pressure on Khartoum," Mustafa Osman Ismail said.

Els off to flyer in Dubai, Woods stays in touch

Ernie Els edged first round honours over Tiger Woods at the Dubai Desert Classic on Thursday but they were both upstaged by joint leaders Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland and Ross Fisher of England. Woods defeated Els in a dramatic play-off for his first Gulf title last year and the South African is out for revenge after finally getting back to full fitness.

Staaldraad back under spotlight

It is not his duty or task to play director in deciding if the now-infamous Kamp Staaldraad DVD should be changed and then released, a high court Judge said on Thursday. Judge Pierre Rabie said possible cuts to the DVD, suggested in argument by legal counsel for former Springbok security consultant Adriaan Heijns and Jan Steyn, are a matter for debate and negotiation between them and the players.

Abortion opponents pray outside Parliament

About 100 opponents of abortion prayed outside the gates of Parliament on Thursday for an end to a practice they say has killed 600 000 foetuses in South Africa over the last ten years. The demonstration was organised by the Christian Action Network to mark the anniversary of the date — February 1 1997 — when abortion on demand became legal in this country.

Somali Islamist leader out of Kenyan custody

Top Islamist leader Sheikh Sharif Ahmed — seen by many as a key to reconciliation in post-war Somalia — has left the custody of Kenyan intelligence and was reported by a website to be heading to Yemen. ”It’s true that I’m heading to Yemen,” he was quoted as saying on the website of the London-based ONKOD news agency run by a Somali journalist.
