Chad rebels attack govt forces

Chadian rebels fighting to overthrow President Idriss Déby Itno on Thursday attacked the eastern border town of Adre on the main road route into Sudan’s Darfur region, the government and rebel spokespersons said. In recent months, several rebel groups have launched a spate of hit-and-run attacks against Chad government forces in the east.

Slowdown in house prices forecast

Standard Bank forecasts a slow down in house prices while maintaining its long-held view that aggregated house prices are unlikely to fall. In a statement released on Thursday, the bank attributed the predicted slowdown to waning investor appetite for buy-to-let residential properties, combined with constrained demand and finances from owner-occupants.

New Harry Potter book out on July 21

The latest Harry Potter book will be published around the world on July 21, British author JK Rowling’s publishers announced on Thursday. <i>Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows</i> is the seventh and final instalment of the boy wizard’s adventures and follows his last year at Hogwarts, the school for witches and wizards.

Buthelezi slams affirmative action

The government’s reckless implementation of the affirmative-action policy is forcing many white people to leave the country, creating a skills shortage crisis, Inkatha Freedom Party leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi said on Thursday. Writing in his weekly letter, Buthelezi said white people need to be offered incentives in order for them to stay in the country.

Anti-Semitic attacks at record level in UK, study shows

Anti-Semitic attacks reached record levels in Britain last year and peaked during the conflict in Lebanon, a study showed on Thursday. Race-hate incidents — ranging from death threats to physical assault — rose by more than 30% to almost 600. ”These are the worst figures we have had in the 23 years since we have been monitoring it,” said Mark Gardner of the Community Security Trust.
