Cachalia to provide feedback on ‘Operation Iron Fist’

Gauteng’s provincial community safety minister Firoz Cachalia will on Friday provide feedback on the crime-prevention operation he launched six months ago, his spokesperson said.

”The briefing will take place at Primemedia offices in Sandton tomorrow [Friday],” said Phumla Sekhonyane.

In a statement in January, Sekhonyane said a press conference will be called to inform the public about the outcome of the operation.

This followed calls from opposition parties and the media who reminded Cachalia of his pledge to resign if Gauteng crime statistics had not decreased in the six months during which the operation was enforced.

Sekhonyane said the period ended on January 11 2007 and that a detailed evaluation would be undertaken.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance’s provincial spokesperson on community safety accused Cachalia of ”ducking and diving”.

John Moody said a ”full disclosure” of the figures would allow the public to judge whether Cachalia was doing his job or whether he should resign.

”If he gives us anything less he will open himself to charges that he is just cherry picking the good stats and ignoring the rest,” he said. – Sapa
