Santos do Ajax a favour

Santos did neighbours Ajax Cape Town a favour on Friday evening at the Athlone Stadium when they beat Silver Stars 2-0 after leading 1-0 at the interval in their Premier Soccer League encounter. The win keeps Ajax at the top of the log, one point ahead of Stars.

Ireland skipper Brian O’Driscoll believes his team can make history by grabbing only the country’s second Grand Slam (beating all other teams in the Six Nations) and emulating their compatriots’ breakthrough triumph of 1948. He believes that now is the time for the Irish to come good.

Bell: England hit rock bottom

England batsman Ian Bell says his side hit rock bottom in their embarrassing nine-wicket loss to Australia in the latest one-day international in Adelaide. They were routed on Friday for just 110 by Australia in 34.3 overs and Bell, who top-scored with 35, said the loss was even more disappointing than their Ashes failures earlier in the tour.

Serena destroys Sharapova to lift title

Serena Williams destroyed Russian top seed Maria Sharapova 6-1 6-2 in the Australian Open final on Saturday to clinch her eighth Grand Slam title. Unseeded after a year plagued by injury, Williams made a mockery of the rankings by tearing the United States Open champion apart in just 63 minutes on the Rod Laver Arena.

Selebi grilled over missing firearms

Police National Commissioner Jackie Selebi came under fire in Parliament on Friday for inadequate control of firearms and problems over police vehicles, South African Broadcasting Corporation news reported. An Auditor General’s report showed the number of stolen and lost firearms had tripled.

Grave undertaking for English football club

Dedicated fans of English football club Plymouth Argyle can now literally die for their team after being given the opportunity to be buried in a coffin painted in the club’s green-and-white colours. A local undertaker is offering followers of the second-tier Championship team a new service where they can choose their own Argyle-themed funeral.

Pakistan battle back against SA

Pakistan fought back after a first-innings collapse on the first day of the series-deciding third and final Test against South Africa at Newlands on Friday. South Africa were 131-5 at the close of play in reply to Pakistan’s 157 all out. Mohammad Yousuf saved Pakistan from total embarrassment, hitting more than half his team’s runs before being last man out.
