Gidani prepares for national lottery

Gidani is continuing its preparations to operate the national lottery despite a legal challenge from Uthingo. ”We continue to assert that we won the license to operate the national lottery from 1 April 2007 in a thorough, scrupulous and well-managed, fair contest,” Gidani chairperson Bongani Khumalo wrote in a statement.

Sharapova fined over father’s coaching

Maria Sharapova was fined  000 after her father coached her from the sidelines during her Australian Open quarterfinal win over Anna Chakvetadze, officials said on Thursday. The top seed received the fine after getting a code violation from Portuguese umpire Mariana Alves during Wednesday’s match because of her father’s behaviour.

Have road signs reached a dead end?

Would our roads be safer with fewer rules, or would chaos reign and the death toll rise? That’s an interesting question being subjected to research in seven cities and regions of Europe, where authorities, encouraged by the European Union, are removing thousands of road signs, traffic lights and barrier lines in an attempt to get motorists to interact in a "free and human way" with each other.

Sudan peace deal ‘unravelling’

A former United States envoy to Sudan on Wednesday complained that United States policy on the country was based on a ”fundamental flaw” and warned a new war could erupt without urgent action. Roger Winter also made a personal appeal to President George Bush, warning that the peace agreement that ended Sudan’s bloody, 21-year civil war was at risk and would darken his White House legacy if it failed.

Hamas one year on

The invitations described it as an opportunity for the "notable people" of Gaza to meet their prime minister, Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas leader who was elected as Palestinian prime minister a year ago. Dressed in a suit and tie and with a red and white keffiyeh draped over his head and shoulders, Haniyeh spoke for an hour to an audience of Palestinian newspaper editors and local figures in Gaza City this week.
