West Africa plans to ask the European Union for a two-year delay to a planned economic partnership agreement (EPA), leaders said at a summit on Friday, but the EU’s executive Commission ruled out a postponement. Brussels hopes to negotiate far-reaching EPAs with six regions in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific to come into force by January 1 2008.

David Beckham’s multimillion-pound contract with the LA Galaxy has sparked resentment amongst his new teammates according to midfielder Peter Vagenas. Former England captain Beckham, currently at Real Madrid, has signed a five-year deal with the Major Soccer League club worth £128-million and is due to arrive in the United States at the end of the current European season.

Top-seeded Maria Sharapova got another taste of the elements, ignoring the saunalike conditions in Rod Laver Arena to advance to the second week of the Australian Open. While often heavy rain prevented play on outside courts, the roof on Rod Laver Arena was closed on Saturday for Sharapova’s 6-3, 6-1 third-round win over 30th-seeded Tathiana Garbin.

The two Boeremag fugitives who were rearrested in the early hours of Saturday morning have been sent back to Pretoria’s C-Max prison. Rudi Gouws (29) and Herman van Rooyen (33) appeared briefly in the Pretoria Regional Court on Saturday morning. They were not charged but would face charges of escaping from lawful custody and the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

Calls by the European Union Parliament for Libya to free medics sentenced to death for infecting hundreds of children with HIV will only worsen the prisoners’ situation, a charity run by Moammar Gadaffi’s son said on Friday. The Parliament urged the states to review ties with oil-rich Libya and step up pressure to secure the early release of the medics.

An African Union mission to Somalia recommended on Friday that it send peacekeepers for six months before handing over to the United Nations to tame a nation in chaos for 16 years. Diplomats see international peacekeepers as the only way to stabilise Somalia once Ethiopian troops return home.

The family of Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty hailed on Saturday the eviction of her chief tormentor from Celebrity Big Brother as a triumph of ”good over evil,” amid a furore over racist bullying on the show. ”This vote has shown that goodness always prevails, like in Bollywood films,” a spokesperson for Shetty and her family said.

Amsterdam’s red-light district will soon get a new attraction: a statue to honour prostitutes around the world. The statue, designed by artist Els Rijerse, will likely be unveiled at the end of March. The statue is meant to give all those men and women strength,” said Mariska Majoor, a former prostitute who commissioned the statue.
