Taliban exposes cracks in Nato

Not many people at Nato’s Brussels headquarters are likely to laugh these days at the old joke that the acronym for the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation actually stands for Now Almost Totally Obsolete. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, Nato’s Secretary General, sees Afghanistan as a test of the alliance’s credibility.

Outrage over Icasa nominees

Opposition MPs have expressed outrage at the final list of nominations for independent communications authority Icasa’s council, which has been passed by the National Assembly. The list contains the names of two current department of communication officials and past councillor Mamodupi Mohlala.

Mbeki: Cosatu congress will strengthen alliance

South African President Thabo Mbeki said on Friday, in his weekly online newsletter ANC Today, that the upcoming Congress of South African Trade Unions’ (Cosatu) national congress would ”further strengthen the long-standing bonds” between the African National Congress (ANC) and Cosatu. ”As before, the ANC will await with great expectation the results of this important congress,” he said.

The South African Congress of Trade Unions (Satawu) re-elected Ezrom Mabyana as its president on Friday. June Dube was re-elected first deputy president and Randall Howard the general secretary on the last day of the union’s second national congress in Boksburg.

Somali police use arms to disperse Islamist protest

Police shot in the air on Friday to disperse a pro-Islamist crowd protesting at the seat of Somalia’s shaky interim government against an African Union plan to send peacekeepers. About 100 people chanting ”God is great!” and ”No to foreign troops!” rallied at the protest organised by religious leaders in Baidoa, the base of the government.

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson said on Friday his Premier League leaders would not underestimate Arsenal when they face their old foes at Old Trafford on Sunday. Prisoners’ body: Fight crime with jobs, education

The government should create jobs and provide education and skills development if it is serious about fighting crime, the South African Prisoners’ Organisation for Human Rights (Sapohr) said on Friday. ”The government has a tendency of panicking and looking for a non-existent quick-fix for crime,” said Sapohr president Golden Miles Bhudu.

Kabila, Bemba set to square off in DRC poll

President Joseph Kabila and Vice-President Jean-Pierre Bemba will face off in the second round of the presidential election in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on October 29, the country’s Supreme Court confirmed on Friday. The court published final results from the first round on July 30, confirming preliminary results giving Kabila the lead.
