Galaxy search shows when the big lights went on

Astronomers peering into deep space believe that the first big galaxies in the universe were forged around 700-million years after the Big Bang that initiated the cosmos. In a record-breaking scan of the skies, a team led by Japanese astronomer Masanori Iye found a galaxy whose light has taken 12,7-thousand million years to reach Earth.

Strengthen alliance, Zuma tells union

African National Congress deputy president Jacob Zuma on Tuesday called for the tripartite alliance to be strengthened to ensure that workers’ interests received greater attention. ”If are we are serious about developing the African National Congress and parliamentary oversight then a lot more energy and focus has to go into the tripartite alliance,” he said.

Irwin’s death sparks bout of stingray mutilations

The natural injustice of the death of Steve Irwin, the daredevil conservationist who wrestled with crocodiles and dangled cobras but was killed by a relatively docile fish, has apparently motivated some of his most ardent supporters to wreak revenge. Two stingrays — typically placid creatures — were found dead on Tuesday with their tails sliced off at Deception Bay, north of Brisbane.

The company on Tuesday night raised the curtain on its plans to take on the movie industry by selling full-length feature films over the internet.
