The African Union may keep its forces in Darfur beyond September 30 if Sudan refuses to allow them to become part of a United Nations peacekeeping operation, a senior United States State Department official said on Wednesday. Sudan has so far rejected a UN Security Council resolution calling for the creation of a UN peacekeeping force in Darfur.

The South African Observer Mission (SAOM) to the July 30 elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo has declared the elections free and fair. ”The SAOM concludes that the DRC’s presidential and legislative elections were democratic, peaceful, credible and remarkably transparent,” Deputy Defence Minister Mluleki George told a media briefing in Cape Town.

Pietermaritzburg High Court Judge Herbert Msimang reserved judgement until September 20 in the state’s application for a postponement of the corruption trial of Jacob Zuma and his co-accused Thint. Meanwhile, the state should be allowed to use documents seized from Zuma and his attorney in raids by the Scorpions last year, its legal team argued on Thursday.

World number two Rafael Nadal crashed out of the United States Open on Wednesday losing to unseeded Mikhail Youzhny, who has made a habit of ousting Spanish top seeds at the ,5-million event. The Russian defeated the two-time French Open champion and Wimbledon finalist Nadal 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7/5), 6-1 in a quarterfinal match.

Amelie Mauresmo and Justine Henin-Hardenne stayed on course on Wednesday for their third Grand Slam final of the year when both scored straight sets wins in the quarterfinals of the United States Open. Top seed Mauresmo of France, who won the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles, cruised past Dinara Safina of Russia 6-2, 6-3 in a lop-sided encounter.

Driefontein and Kloof Gold Mines in South Africa have been marked to receive a large cash injection of R4,7-billion, Gold Fields Limited said on Thursday. The investment is pegged for the deepening of Gold Field’s flagship operations and will access an additional 10,8-million ounces of gold below the current infrastructure.

Seventeen Russian bells which hang in a Harvard University tower are destined to return to their spiritual home near Moscow after nearly 80 years in exile. The bells were saved from destruction at the Danilovsky monastery — seen as the spiritual home of the Orthodox church — during Stalin’s attacks on religion in the 1920s.
