Economy is the real newsmaker, says Manuel

South African Minister of Finance Trevor Manuel said on Thursday that while he was made newsmaker of the year on Wednesday night, it was the economy in the past year that was actually newsmaker of the year. However, he added that there are still many things that need to be done, with education one of the biggest challenges going forward.

Report: Patients forcibly held in Burundi hospitals

Hundreds of patients are forcibly held in Burundi’s hospitals — sometimes for months — over unpaid bills and many have to sell prized land or cattle to leave, a human rights report said on Thursday. Health care for mothers and children under five is free in the tiny Central African country whose shattered economy is emerging from more than a decade of ethnic conflict.

Ugandan rebels not yet at agreed camps

No Ugandan rebels have arrived yet at remote camps in south Sudan where they are supposed to assemble under the terms of a landmark truce that began last week, Ugandan negotiators said on Thursday. According to the deal that came into effect on August 29, Lord’s Resistance Army fighters were given three weeks to gather at the two locations.

Media says Blair sets May 2007 as departure date

British Prime Minister Tony Blair will step down early in May next year after a revolt by disenchanted supporters campaigning for him to end almost 10 years in office, British media reported on Thursday. Asked to comment on the reports, a spokesperson for Blair’s office said: ”People should not get ahead of themselves and should wait to hear if or what the prime minister has to say.”

World markets knock JSE, rand caps losses

The JSE was taking a pummelling in noon trade on Thursday following a sell-off in equity markets globally. A sharply weaker rand — which was at its worst levels in almost 11 weeks — helped cushion the blow to an extent. By 12.11pm, the all-share index slipped 1,01%. Resources retreated 1,16%, the gold-mining index tumbled 2,8% and the platinum-mining index lost 0,78%.

Pirates return to scene of triumph

Orlando Pirates of South Africa return to the scene of their greatest triumph when they face Asec Mimosas of Côte d’Ivoire on Sunday in the African Champions League. Held at home in the 1995 final, the Buccaneers stunned a capacity crowd at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan by winning the return match 1-0.

Blue Bulls to launch rugby college

The Blue Bulls Rugby Union will start a rugby college with the goal being to broaden the basis of underage amateur and professional rugby and to strengthen club rugby in the province. Students will enrol for one or two years with their base being at Loftus Versfeld and will be exposed to the professional coaching and conditioning structures.
