World oil prices moved in different directions on Tuesday when trading was resumed in New York crude. New York’s main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in October, tumbled 83 cents to ,36 per barrel in electronic deals before the official opening of the United States market.

Industrialised economies are heading for growth of 3% this year, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) said on Tuesday, suggesting that interest rates in the eurozone and United States could rise further but that the Bank of Japan should be cautious.

South Africa is to take up a two-year, non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council from January 1 next year, President Thabo Mbeki said on Tuesday. Speaking at a press conference after talks with visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin, he said he is looking forward to closer cooperation with Russia in this regard.

About 1 000 Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) shop stewards gathered outside the United States embassy in Pretoria on Tuesday to demand that the country stop supporting Israel. Although peaceful, the crowd vocally objected when US representatives refused to receive their memorandum outside the embassy compound.

The provincial chairperson of the Friends of Jacob Zuma Trust was shot outside his Meadowlands home on Monday and died on Tuesday, the head of communications for the trust, Kaizer Mohau, said. ”Seven bullets were pumped into Zodathi Sithole’s body,” said Mohau. ”He died in hospital this [Tuesday] morning.”

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) on Tuesday welcomed the agreement to limit Chinese clothing and textile imports. Spokesperson Mziwakhe Hlangani said in a statement that the move will benefit the local manufacturing sector by creating 55Â 000 jobs.

The African National Congress (ANC) on Tuesday rejected as false media reports that its deputy president Jacob Zuma was ”gagged” from addressing the recent national congress of the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union. ”The ANC does not understand why some sections of the media … should continue to publish reports that are wholly false,” said ANC spokesperson Smuts Ngonyama.

The state on Tuesday invited Jacob Zuma’s legal team to submit evidence taken in controversial search-and-seizure raids to be adjudicated by the Pietermaritzburg High Court, saying this would speed up the corruption trial. The state said on the status of the various search-and-seizure raids were the main reason for the need for a postponement.
