Debate over Mbeki house hots up

Allegations of racism and hate speech flew thick and fast on Tuesday when the National Assembly debated the multimillion-rand private residence being built by President Thabo Mbeki and his wife, Zanele. The debate followed a statement by Minister of Public Works Thoko Didiza.

Russia to work with SA on UN Security Council

South Africa is to take up a two-year, non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council from January 1 next year, President Thabo Mbeki said on Tuesday. Speaking at a press conference after talks with visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin, he said he is looking forward to closer cooperation with Russia in this regard.

Cosatu protests against US support for Israel

About 1 000 Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) shop stewards gathered outside the United States embassy in Pretoria on Tuesday to demand that the country stop supporting Israel. Although peaceful, the crowd vocally objected when US representatives refused to receive their memorandum outside the embassy compound.

Provincial chair of Zuma trust shot dead

The provincial chairperson of the Friends of Jacob Zuma Trust was shot outside his Meadowlands home on Monday and died on Tuesday, the head of communications for the trust, Kaizer Mohau, said. ”Seven bullets were pumped into Zodathi Sithole’s body,” said Mohau. ”He died in hospital this [Tuesday] morning.”

ANC rejects claims of gagging Zuma

The African National Congress (ANC) on Tuesday rejected as false media reports that its deputy president Jacob Zuma was ”gagged” from addressing the recent national congress of the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union. ”The ANC does not understand why some sections of the media … should continue to publish reports that are wholly false,” said ANC spokesperson Smuts Ngonyama.

Zuma defence lambastes state

<a href="http://www.mg.co.za/specialreport.aspx?area=zuma_report"><img src="http://www.mg.co.za/ContentImages/243078/zuma.jpg" align=left border=0></a>The case against former deputy president Jacob Zuma should be struck from the roll and charges brought against him only when the state has its "house in order", his advocate told the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Tuesday. Kemp J Kemp, counsel for Zuma, accused the state of not complying with its constitutional obligation to provide a final indictment.
