Zim minister acquitted in bribery case

Zimbabwe’s Justice Minister Patrick Chinamasa was on Monday acquitted of trying to bribe a witness not to testify against a Cabinet colleague accused of inciting violence. ”The [prosecution] has dismally failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt and the accused is therefore found not guilty and acquitted,” magistrate Phineas Chipokoteke told the court.

Cosatu gets backing ahead of congress

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) says it will back the existing Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) leadership at this month’s congress, with the addition of a metal worker to the top structure. ”Numsa backs the current collective leadership,” said Numsa general secretary Silumko Nondwando on Monday.

Grave found of Kurds ‘buried alive’

Iraqi security forces on Monday found the remains of 18 Kurdish men, women and children whom they believe were buried alive in a mass grave during the former regime of Saddam Hussein. Colonel Sarhad Kadar of the Iraqi police said the mass grave had been found in Tarkalan, 25km south-east of the northern city of Kirkuk.

Kabila bloc leads in DRC parliamentary poll

The group of parties led by Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) President Joseph Kabila has taken a commanding lead in parliamentary elections, according to partial results released on Monday. The 31-party Alliance of the Presidential Majority, headed by the 35-year-old president, gained 169 out of the 340 parliamentary seats for which results have been counted.

Inzamam likely know fate in September

Pakistan captain Inzamam ul-Haq’s disciplinary hearing is likely to be held on September 27 or 28, a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) source said on Monday. ”The ICC [International Cricket Council] has indicated to us about the proposed dates for the hearing. They will make a formal announcement themselves,” the source said.

ANC ‘not aware’ of Zuma conspiracy probe

The African National Congress is not investigating claims by Jacob Zuma that there is a conspiracy against him, the ANC said on Monday. Speaking at a press conference to brief the media on a planned vigil to be held outside the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Monday night, KwaZulu-Natal ANC secretary general Senzo Mchunu said he was not ”aware” of any investigation.

AU can stay in Darfur, for now

Sudan will allow African Union troops to remain in its turbulent Darfur region but only if their AU mandate was extended beyond September 30 and not as part of a United Nations force, a presidential adviser said on Monday. Sudan has raised alarms that its turbulent west could descend into full-blown war.
