At least 12 people were killed and 11 wounded on Monday when Somali police clashed with gunmen for control of the airport in the government seat of Baidoa, officials and witnesses said. The fighting erupted as members of the weak transitional administration met with Somalia’s powerful Islamic movement in Sudan.

Anarchic Somalia has confounded United States foreign policy once again, leaving Washington struggling to find a coherent approach to a state whose internal turmoil threatens to destabilise the Horn of Africa. Islamic militants who control much of southern Somalia have given the country’s weak government a list of demands, including that the administration reverse its call for international peacekeepers, officials involved in peace talks said on Monday. The Islamic group gave the document to government negotiators after the talks began in Khartoum on Saturday.

It seems quite mild as you approach — just a long wire fence with an innocuous sign that says something about correctional services Boksburg. We’re way out in the veld in the middle of fast-growing suburbia, wondering why people would live here. But they do — signs of normality, schoolboys slouching down the roads in their green and grey uniforms in the middle of the morning.

More children are attending and finishing school but more are vulnerable due to poverty and the death of at least one parent, said an Education Department report released on Monday. The report found that the demand for high school and higher education institutions would probably grow strongly while demand for primary schools would grow more slowly.

The JSE was in positive territory just after midday on Monday, after stronger world markets pushed it to a record high in late morning trade. The Labour Day holiday in the United States made for light volumes. By 12.19pm, the all-share index was up 0,79% at 22Â 388,28, having traded as high as 22Â 417,68.
