Rand, Telkom whack JSE

Despite reaching a record high at the opening, the JSE was in the red in noon trade on Thursday, beaten into retreat by the rand, which broke below the R6 per dollar level. Telkom, which was hammered after it announced that it planned to spend 30 billion rand over the next five years in capital investment on its fixed line operations, also dragged on the bourse.

M&G wins investigative journalism award

Dubbed by many as one of South Africa’s boldest cartoonists, Jonathan Shapiro — Zapiro — was named overall winner and Journalist of the Year at the annual Mondi Shanduka newspaper awards held in Sandton, Johannesburg, on Wednesday evening. The <i>Mail & Guardian</i> won the investigative journalism category for "Oilgate" by Stefaans Brümmer, Sam Sole and Wisani wa ka Ngobeni.

Merck ordered to pay $4,5m in Vioxx suit

A jury has ordered pharma giant Merck to pay ,5-million to a man claiming that the pain medication Vioxx had caused his heart attack, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday. A New Jersey jury on Wednesday delivered a split decision in the cases of two men who said they had suffered heart attacks after taking Merck’s Vioxx.

Union calls off security strike

The South African Trade and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu) on Thursday urged all its security guard members who were on strike to go back to work. On Wednesday, the labour court granted employers an interim interdict to declare the continued strike by Satawu illegal.

Apple unveils software for Macs to run Windows

Apple Computer unveiled software on Wednesday that enables its Mac computers with Intel processors to run rival Microsoft’s Windows XP operating system. Apple said that its software, called Boot Camp, was available for download starting on Wednesday, and that the application will be a feature in Leopard, the company’s next release of the Mac operating system.
