DRC needs 40 000 sleeping bags before poll

Deputy Defence Minister Mluleki George said on Thursday he would try to determine what resources South Africa can commit to help secure the landmark election in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). On Wednesday the DRC’s Defence Minister, Adolphe Onusumba, presented a long list of needs for the country’s defence force.

The Economist: ANC prizes loyalty above competence

The African National Congress is the target of some heavy-handed criticism in <i>The Economist’s</i> April 8 South Africa survey. Under an umbrella that spells out the ANC’s difficulties in turning itself into a modern, democratic party, <i>The Economist</i> is forthright: "The ANC still has a top-down authoritarian structure where loyalty to the political cause is prized above almost everything else, including competence."

Don’t mock the new Toyota RAV4

While true 4×4 enthusiasts love to mock the Toyota RAV4, every month between 200 and 300 South Africans reach into their wallets and vote quietly for the little soft-roader. Why not? It’s very well built, it’s capable of more than most buyers would expect off-road, and it’s a Toyota. It symbolises eternal youth, and as such, they reckon, it sends out a message that you’re, well, special.

Zuma’s daughter had ‘uneasy feeling’

Jacob Zuma’s daughter did not want the woman he allegedly raped to spend the night at Zuma’s Johannesburg house last year as she had an ”uneasy feeling” about the woman. Dudzile Zuma (23) told the Johannesburg High Court on Thursday ”I got an uneasy feeling about her … something about her just wasn’t sitting right with me.”

Arsenal, Barcelona through to the semifinals

Arsenal progressed serenely into the Champions League semifinals for the first time in their history on Wednesday with a thoroughly professional performance against Italian giants Juventus. The Gunners drew 0-0 — winning 2-0 on aggregate — against a less-than-inspired Juventus outfit, whose appalling disciplinary record in the quarterfinal saw a third player sent off in Pavel Nedved.

Rand, Telkom whack JSE

Despite reaching a record high at the opening, the JSE was in the red in noon trade on Thursday, beaten into retreat by the rand, which broke below the R6 per dollar level. Telkom, which was hammered after it announced that it planned to spend 30 billion rand over the next five years in capital investment on its fixed line operations, also dragged on the bourse.

M&G wins investigative journalism award

Dubbed by many as one of South Africa’s boldest cartoonists, Jonathan Shapiro — Zapiro — was named overall winner and Journalist of the Year at the annual Mondi Shanduka newspaper awards held in Sandton, Johannesburg, on Wednesday evening. The <i>Mail & Guardian</i> won the investigative journalism category for "Oilgate" by Stefaans Brümmer, Sam Sole and Wisani wa ka Ngobeni.
