Celtic secure vital PSL victory

Bloemfontein Celtic secured a vital Premier Soccer League (PSL) win on Sunday afternoon, defeating high-flying Ajax Cape Town 2-0 in a rescheduled match in Potchefstroom. The match was due be played last year, but owing to the pitch not meeting Fifa requirements, the game was called off by the referee.

PSL takeover of Bafana ‘far-fetched’

CEO Trevor Phillips has described weekend reports that the Premier Soccer League (PSL) is poised to take over control of Bafana Bafana as ”far-fetched” — but confirmed there will probably be a greater involvement by the professional organisation in the running of the national team.

France take inaugural A1 season title

France, with 22-year-old Nicolas Lapierre behind the wheel, wrapped up the championship in the first season of the A1 Grand Prix of Nations by finishing second to Mexico in a 30-minute sprint race on Sunday. Mexico’s 20-year-old Salvador Duran made it a doubleheader sweep for his team in the main race.

Alonso beats Schumacher in Bahrain

Fernando Alonso warned on Sunday that he is in no mood to give up his world driver’s crown without a fight by beating Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher in the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix. Alonso made use of a perfect strategy from his Renault team to win by 1,2 seconds from pole-sitter Schumacher.

DA accuses ANC of ‘shameless hypocrisy’

The Democratic Alliance insisted on Sunday that its candidate for mayor of Cape Town, Helen Zille, should get the top job in the hung metropolitan council. The African National Congress has insisted that Zille not be mayor. According to media reports, Zille’s position was compromised during horse-trading with other political parties.
