In the United States they had Dan Rather; in Britain they had 7/7. The ”tipping point” may have come at different times, but old media behemoths know the game is up. Even Rupert Murdoch says so. For the first time there is a consensus around the notion that ”citizen participation” on websites is going to change traditional news journalism for good.

Crowds turfed out of Central Park

New York’s Central Park has faced its share of threats over the years, from violent criminals lurking in the bushes to an alligator hiding in one of its ponds. But the city’s park authorities have now committed themselves to rooting out a more persistent weed — crowds of people.

Fires rage in the Western Cape

Firefighters were on Monday busy combating mountain fires that started last week in the Cape winelands. Conservation manager Patrick Shone said the affected areas were Wemmershoek and the Groot Drakenstein mountain. Almost 11 800ha of fynbos has been destroyed in Wemmershoek and 7 100ha on the Groot Drakenstein.

King Sigcau dies in Pretoria

King Xolilizwe Sigcau of the Xhosas died at Number One Military Hospital in Pretoria on Saturday night, South African Broadcasting Corporation radio news said on Sunday. According to the report, the 79-year-old king died after suffering a long period of health problems.

Hingis makes winning return from retirement

Martina Hingis made a successful return to competitive tennis on Monday after a three-year absence, beating Maria Vento-Kabchi of Venezuela 6-2, 6-1 at the Australian women’s hardcourt championships. The 25-year-old Hingis, winner of five Grand Slam singles titles, made a nervous start when both players exchanged service breaks.
