Ugandan leader defends re-election bid

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has defended his bid for re-election after 20 years in power, saying he is running in next week’s polls because he needs more time to stabilise Uganda, build democracy and national unity, and defeat terrorism. ”I need … the power of the state to help solve people’s problems,” he said.

Nine oil workers kidnapped in Nigeria

United States oil-services contractor Willbros Group has confirmed that nine employees, including three Americans, were kidnapped on Saturday in Nigeria by guerrillas who attacked a Niger Delta oil terminal. Willbros ”has not, at this time, been contacted by the group which has claimed responsibility”, it said.

Drought threatens East Africa’s wildlife

A searing drought has killed dozens of wild animals in Kenya and neighbouring Tanzania, and has partially disrupted the annual migration of wildebeest and zebras between the two East African nations, conservation officials said. Maasai warriors and others are driving tens of thousands of cattle inside Kenya’s wildlife sanctuaries.

SA women’s hockey team take top honours

The South African women’s hockey team emerged as convincing champions of the inaugural Spar Cup at the Queensmead Astroturf in Durban on Saturday. They defeated Scotland 4-0 in the final to take top honours in the four-nation tournament. The first half saw an expert display from the South African side.

Crusaders down battling Reds

All Blacks flyhalf Daniel Carter scored two tries among 27 points on Saturday as the Canterbury Crusaders beat the Queensland Reds 47-21 in a Super 14 rugby. The final score line at Ballymore hid the fact that the Queensland Reds competed for most of the match and were still narrowly ahead with three-quarters of the match elapsed.

Sharks lose to Cheetahs by one point

Never write off a Cheetah — especially a wounded one. That was the lesson the Sharks learnt at the Absa Stadium in Durban on Saturday when they lost their home Super 14 rugby encounter against the Free Staters by a single point in a 26-27 defeat, in which the Cheetahs also picked up a valuable bonus point.

Liverpool beat Man United in FA Cup

Peter Crouch’s goal gave Liverpool their first win in the FA Cup against Manchester United for 85 years as Rafael Benitez’s men advanced into the quarterfinals with a 1-0 victory at Anfield on Saturday. Also, Newcastle saw off Championship side Southampton 1-0 and Charlton ended Brentford’s Cup run with a 3-1 win.
