SA dig in against Australia

South Africa dug in for a war of attrition after Mike Hussey revived Australia’s chances with a dynamic rearguard century on the second day of the second cricket Test in Melbourne on Tuesday. The South Africans lost both openers, skipper Graeme Smith (22) and AB de Villiers (61), after Australia ended their first innings on 355.

Chad accuses Sudan of planning fresh attack

Chad’s President Idriss Deby late on Monday accused neighbouring Sudan of preparing a new ”aggression” by Chadian rebel groups operating out of Sudanese territory, after an attack on the eastern border town of Adre on December 18. Such an attack is being planned at El Geinena in western Sudan, Deby declared.

Oil prices slip on forecast of milder US weather

Crude futures fell on Tuesday in thin post-Christmas trading, as forecasters in the United States said the weather would be milder in the week ahead, raising traders’ expectations of lower demand for heating fuels. Light, sweet crude for February delivery slipped 82 cents to ,60 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Champagne sales rise outside France

French wine exports may be falling, but there is a sparkling exception to the prevailing gloom, as sales of champagne fizz with health thanks to a growing thirst for it abroad, especially at this time of year. French drinkers remain the chief clients for the legendary tipple, but they are consuming less.

Chelsea head for another record season

Approaching the midpoint of the English Premier League season, Chelsea already are way ahead of last year’s record pace. With their 3-2 win over Fulham on Monday, Chelsea won their 16th game in 18 matches and stayed nine points atop the league. Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham also won to keep pace.
