The floods have killed at least 200 people and displaced hundreds of thousands in 17 countries since the summer, including Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo, Uganda and Kenya.

Torrential downpours and flash floods across Africa have submerged whole towns and washed away bridges, farms and schools. This summer’s rains have killed more than 150 people, displaced hundreds of thousands and prompted the United Nations to warn of a rising risk of disease outbreaks.
Uganda’s oldest captive chimpanzee turned 43 on Wednesday with a banana cake and ”regular love and grooming” from his female companions, his keepers said. Zakayo, who was taken into captivity after being attacked by poachers, was presented with a specially baked banana cake.
Stalled peace talks to end a brutal 20-year insurgency by the Ugandan rebel Lord’s Resistance Army are to resume, government officials said on Tuesday. ”Both parties have agreed to resume talks,” Ruhakana Rugunda, head of the government negotiating team and Minister of Internal Affairs, told journalists.

Alice Lakwena, a Ugandan warrior priestess who led an ill-fated insurgency to topple President Yoweri Museveni in the 1980s, was laid to rest on Saturday at a funeral attended by several hundred followers. An enigmatic leader, Lakwena inspired her poorly equipped troops with claims that spirits spoke through her.
Ugandan rebel leader Joseph Kony told journalists he was committed to negotiating peace after 19 years of war, and denied he had committed war crimes. Kony, whose Lord’s Resistance Army is fighting a rebellion in northern Uganda, rarely appears in public.
