The 78-year-old man shot by the United States Vice-President, Dick Cheney, during a hunting trip to Texas suffered a heart attack after a pellet moved into his heart on Tuesday, igniting fresh criticism of White House secrecy about the event. Harry Whittington underwent a cardiac catherisation on Tuesday morning after suffering arrhythmia.

The ”godfather” and ”enforcer” of an Australian drug gang were sentenced to death on Tuesday by an Indonesian court for organising an attempt to smuggle more than 8,3kg of heroin from Bali to Sydney. Two other members of the nine-strong gang, who were caught with drugs strapped to their bodies, were jailed for life.

Eight men were arrested on Tuesday for their alleged involvement in the death of a suspected car thief in Schweizer-Reneke, North West police said. Captain Afjee Bothma said it was believed a man spotted two thieves trying to steal a vehicle outside the Bullet Pub shortly before 11pm on Monday.

A German newspaper on Tuesday published a cartoon depicting the Iranian football team dressed as suicide bombers, opening up a new front in the row over caricatures of the prophet Muhammad. Iran immediately demanded an apology from Der Tagesspiegel, which showed four Iranian players at this summer’s World Cup in Germany with explosives attached to their chests.

Zimbabwean ambassador to South Africa Simon Khaya Moyo has lodged a complaint with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) for ”negative” reporting on his country, the Herald newspaper said on Wednesday. Its website quoted Moyo as saying the South African public broadcaster’s approach was astounding.

Front-runner René PrĂ©val on Tuesday decried ”massive fraud or gross errors” in Haiti’s presidential election, insisted he won outright, and urged supporters to continue protesting. The presidency promptly announced the formation of a commission to investigate the claims and called for final results of the February 7 election to be kept under wraps until the probe is completed.

There is no meaningful response to climate change without massive social change. A cap on this and a quota on the other will not do it. Tinker at the edges as we may, we cannot sustain Earth’s life-support systems within the present economic system. Capitalism is not sustainable by its very nature.
