The number of abalone poachers arrested on the Eastern Cape coast had risen from 129 in 2003 to 168 in 2004, according to Environmental Affairs and Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk. Although the total abalone stock lost could not be determined, he said that between January this year and October 31, 93 poachers had been arrested.

Since the beginning of December, 560 people have been killed on South African roads — mostly due to drunken driving, driver fatigue and speeding. At about the same time last year, 726 road deaths had been reported. Road accidents have also decreased, from 619 up to this time in December 2004 to 466 thus far.

The Democratic Alliance on Monday accused President Thabo Mbeki of being ”obfuscatory” about his involvement in the arms deal. Mbeki had given a ”completely unsatisfactory” answer to a DA question on whether he met representatives of French arms company Thomson-CSF in 1998, said DA public accounts spokesperson Eddie Trent.

The latest DI900 data supplied by the South African Reserve Bank indicates that the large four banks are continuing to take market share from the smaller banks, says Efficient Group economist Nico Kelder. Former deputy president Jacob Zuma has written a letter to the chief executive of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) demanding why an interview with him on Sunday was cancelled. Zuma was invited to speak to the state broadcaster after he was judged Newsmaker of the Year.

The United Kingdom’s first gay couple to win legal recognition under a new British civil-partnership law drove past anti-homosexual protesters on Monday to make their marriage-style vows inside Belfast City Hall. Three homosexual couples were scheduled to sign the civil partnership register on Monday in Belfast City Hall.

Retief Goosen made a crucial birdie putt on the 18th hole to win the South African Airways Open by one stroke from Ernie Els at The Links, Fancourt, on Sunday. Goosen posted a 70 for a 72-hole aggregate of 282, 10-under-par, while Els fired a five-under-par 68 for a 283 at nine under.
