Cold weather kills 36 in India

The death toll from the relentless cold front sweeping across north India has climbed to 36, it was reported on Sunday. The deaths have been reported from the Uttar Pradesh state over the last week, the NDTV network reported. Most of those who died were homeless people.

Stampede at Indian relief camp leaves 45 dead

At least 45 people, mostly women, were killed and more than 50 injured on Sunday in a stampede for food coupons at a flood relief camp in the southern Indian city of Chennai. More than 3 000 people affected by floods had gathered at a government school in the Tamil Nadu state capital to collect food coupons early on Sunday.

After the wave, the struggle to rebuild shattered lives

Seven Acehnese young men living in a rough, homemade wooden shack on stilts in the village of Lampuuk, 30km from the northern tip of Sumatra, are learning self-sufficiency the hard way. All are the only members of their immediate families to survive last year’s Boxing Day tsunami and rather than be packed off to distant relatives they decided to band together and form their own ”family”.

Global trade riots rock Hong Kong

Hong Kong was hit by its most violent street clashes in more than 30 years on Saturday night as riot police fought running battles with protesters on the penultimate day of World Trade Organisation talks. Police Commissioner Dick Lee said 41 people — including five police — were injured, but only two of them needed to be kept in hospital.

Perth Test hangs in the balance

Australia were 185-4 in their second innings at tea on day three of the fiercely contested first Test match against South Africa. Captain Ricky Ponting hit his second half-century of the match before being caught behind off Makhaya Ntini. Brad Hodge was not out on 22 with Michael Hussey on one with Australia 147 runs ahead.

Crocodiles kill 13 in Zimbabwe

Hunger and repression make life tough enough for most Zimbabweans, but in the rural areas the wildlife is making life tricky too. This year crocodiles took a narrow lead over elephants as the most dangerous animal to humans, according to new statistics released this weekend by a Zimbabwean conservation group.

Gifts of learning save lives

A crowd of hundreds had gathered outside. Some people had been waiting for an hour and were pressed up against the glass. As the door was unlatched at 8.30am, they surged forward, the men using their strength to get to the front. Once inside they ran to secure a place. This is a scene replayed every morning in towns and cities across Malawi.

Cycling for recycling in Johannesburg

Charles Mbiza’s bicycle is more than a method of transport. It’s a metaphor for the state of rubbish collection in South Africa’s commercial hub, Johannesburg. The bike — actually more of a large tricycle — is one of several that were introduced to collect waste such as used paper cups during the World Summit on Sustainable Development, held three years ago in Johannesburg.
