Vodacom to increase investment in Tanzania

South African mobile service provider Vodacom is to significantly increase its capital investment in Tanzania, leading to the creation of many more jobs in that country. Alan Knott-Craig, Vodacom Group chief executive officer, on Tuesday said the group would be increasing its investment in the East African state by about 150-billion Tanzanian shillings ($ 1 260 504) in the next year.

Pakistan police tear-gas cartoon protesters

Police used tear gas and water cannon on Tuesday to disperse hundreds of students who stormed the diplomatic enclave in Pakistan’s capital in protest against cartoons of the prophet Muhammad. Around 600 demonstrators, most of them wearing school uniforms, chanted "Death to Denmark, Death to America" as they marched towards the Indian and British high commissions.

Israel excludes Palestinians from fertile valley

Israel has effectively annexed the Jordan Valley — about a third of the occupied West Bank — by barring almost all Palestinians from entering the region, a respected Israeli human rights group said on Monday. ”This annexation … constitutes a flagrant breach of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination,” it said.

Bosman helps Eagles into final

The Eagles swooped into the Standard Bank Pro20 final on the wings of a soaring half-century by Loots Bosman in their semifinal against the Lions in Bloemfontein on Monday. Bosman blitzed 75 off 38 balls with two fours and six sixes to bolster the home side’s total of 188 for six.

Zim’s multimillionaires live in poverty

The poverty line for a family of five living in Zimbabwe is now Z-million (about R1 200) a month, Harare’s Herald newspaper reported on Tuesday. It quoted the Central Statistical Office as saying the average five-member Zimbabwe family has to spend at least Z,8-million a month on food to remain healthy.
