Malinga Bandara took four wickets on Tuesday to bowl Sri Lanka to a 76-run win over South Africa and into a place opposite Australia in the tri-series limited-overs cricket finals. Bandara came into the match in the 20th over and turned the match in Sri Lanka’s favour when he claimed four wickets between the 27th and 35th overs.

Changes in sexual behaviour seem to be behind the dramatic drop in HIV prevalence in Zimbabwe, according to researchers. There has been an almost 50% decline in HIV prevalence in some groups in Zimbabwe as people delay when they first have sex and cut down on casual partners, according to their research.

Thirteen people were killed, mostly police, when a suicide bomber loyal to the ousted Taliban regime blew himself up at the police headquarters in Kandahar, Afghanistan, on Tuesday, officials said. A man claiming to be a spokesperson for the Taliban militia said the radical Sunni Muslim movement was responsible for the blast.

Rebels killed four United States marines and at least six Iraqis died in attacks on Tuesday amid a tight security clampdown ahead of the major Shi’ite Muslim ceremony of Ashura, a favourite target of Sunni insurgents. The marines were killed in the two rebel strikes in the western province of al-Anbar.

Oil prices slipped on Monday as traders took profits after prices surged on fears that Iran might halt oil exports and after a cold front in the north-east United States was milder than expected. Light, sweet crude for March delivery fell by 26 cents to settle at ,11 a barrel on Monday on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

An epidemic has killed 60 000 chickens in northern Nigeria, officials said on Monday, while attempting to calm fears that the deadly bird-flu virus had spread to the country. Salihu Jibrin, director of veterinary services in Kano state’s agriculture ministry, said initial evidence suggests that the devastating outbreak was fowl cholera.
