Saga that refuses to ‘simply go away’

The national director of public prosecutions has refused to take any action on the Oilgate scandal for six months, says the official opposition Democratic Alliance. Spokesperson Hendrik Schmidt said the National Prosecuting Authority’s failure to take any action on this matter "is disgraceful and only serves to give the impression that it is desperately hoping the matter with simply go away".

China’s economy likely to be in world’s top five

China’s economy likely became one of the world’s five biggest in 2005 as booming exports and surging investment again helped secure growth of well above nine percent, analysts said on Monday. Ahead of Wednesday’s release of China’s 2005 economic data, analysts expect the world fastest growing major economy to surge between 9,5 and 10,3% to surpass the two-trillion-dollar mark.

Faltering Ferrari pin hopes on new car

Ferrari will on Tuesday officially unveil their new car for the 2006 Formula One season which they hope will recapture the title from Renault. The car has already been seen having made an unexpectedly early debut at Fiorano on January 16 where seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher drove it for 51 laps.

Nurse gets prison term for pulling nails off patients

A Japanese court on Monday sentenced a former assistant nurse to three years and eight months in prison for manually pulling 49 fingernails and toenails off of six female patients in 2004. The Kyoto District Court ruled that Akemi Sato (32) committed cruel and selfish crimes against her patients, most of whom had almost no physical strength to resist.

Who’s to judge Saddam Hussein?

With the trial of deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein on charges of crimes against humanity set to resume Tuesday, the court still had to decide on Monday who will be the chief judge. For the last seven sessions Judge Rizkar Mohammed Amin has been the most public judicial face of the trial of Saddam and seven co-defendants over the massacre of Shi’ites from the town of Dujail in the 1980s.

UN appeals for millions in aid for Ethiopia

The United Nations on Monday issued an urgent appeal for -million in emergency aid for multiple humanitarian crises and threats facing Ethiopia, including the risk of famine from a searing drought that has hit East Africa. About 1,7-million Ethiopians are among up to 11-million people throughout four nations in the region in dire need of food assistance to survive.

Nigerian militants promise to release oil workers

Militants holding four foreign hostages in Nigeria claimed on Sunday they would release the captives soon, according to a statement purportedly from the militant group. The hostages were seized near a Shell oil field on January 11 by a group that also claimed responsibility for other oil industry attacks that have cut Nigerian production by almost 10%.

20 000 flee DRC violence, seek refuge in Uganda

About 20 000 people have fled violence in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo to seek refuge in the border to Uganda over a four-day period, the United Nations refugee agency said on Sunday. Most of the refugees said they had fled to escape violence, while about 5 000 said they left the DRC because they feared attack.

Gauteng to take action after toddler’s death in manhole

The Gauteng department of local government on Sunday announced it would be looking into closing all open manholes that were no longer in use. This follows the death of Mpho Raliete (3) of Katlehong on the East Rand, who died after falling into a manhole on Friday. The child’s body was washed through the sewage line and found 15km away at the treatment plant in Kliprivier.

Bitter rivals set for Afcon showdown

Hosts Egypt go up against bitter rivals Morocco in Cairo on Tuesday in what should be one of the highlights of the African Nations Cup. The Group A clash will more than likely see Morocco exit the tournament should they lose and victory for Egypt would see the hosts through to the quarterfinals.
