Caravaggio paintings found in French church

In one of France’s most exciting artistic discoveries of recent years, two paintings by the 16th century Italian artist Caravaggio have been found in a church in the central town of Loches. <i>Pilgrimage of Our Lord to Emmaus</i> and <i>Saint Thomas putting his finger on Christ’s wound</i> were discovered in 1999 under the organ loft in the church of Saint Anthony.

Tshwane mayor low on list, PE mayor dropped

The African National Congress has published its national consolidated list of candidates for all municipalities for the 2006 local government elections due to take place on March 1. Nelson Mandela metro mayor Nceba Faku does not appear at all on the list while Tshwane Mayor Smangaliso Mkhathswa appears at number four slot.

Still no sign of e-mail hoax suspect

There was no sign of the missing IT salesperson allegedly at the centre of the African National Congress’s spy and hoax e-mail saga on Wednesday, police said. The search was continuing, ”however, there have been no new developments,” said Director Sally de Beer, spokesperson for National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi.

Ford denies plans to cut jobs in SA

The Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) has denied that it plans to retrench hundreds of workers, as the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa feared. ”[At present] there are no plans to retrench any employees [in South Africa],” FMCSA spokesperson Ben Pillay said on Wednesday.

Eriksson not ashamed of salary

Sven-Goran Eriksson on Wednesday hit back at those who claim he has not been worth his money. The England head coach will step down after the World Cup in Germany, two years before his contract is due to expire. But the Swede warned that the Football Association will have to pay his successor a similar salary to his own earnings.

FA Premier League launches transfer probe

The Football Association (FA) Premier League, which represents the 20 clubs in England’s top-flight division, said on Tuesday it is to launch an inquiry into financial procedures in player transfers since January 2004. The decision comes soon after allegations of transfer bungs from Luton boss Mike Newell and QPR coach Ian Holloway.
