No one is particularly surprised that a stressful day at work raises blood pressure, but a new study in Britain suggests that on-the-job tension also can lead to heart disease and diabetes. A study of more than 10 000 British civil servants over a 14-year period has found a possible biological explanation for why workplace stress adversely effects health.

Wilson Pickett, the soul pioneer best known for the fiery hits Mustang Sally and In The Midnight Hour, died of a heart attack in a Reston, Virginia, hospital, his management company said. He was 64. Pickett died on Thursday after having suffered from health problems for the past year, said Chris Tuthill of the management company Talent Source.

The South African economy is capable of growing much faster than it has in the past, a panel of experts told a group of government ministers in Pretoria on Thursday. The panel comprised economic and political experts from Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of London.

Gay men should not be excluded from donating blood on the basis of their identity or HIV status, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) said on Friday, ”but rather on the basis of epidemiological data or research, which according to the SAHRC does not convincingly exist in South Africa”.

Zimbabwe’s 10 provinces are being asked to raise one billion Zimbabwean dollars ( 000) each to celebrate President Robert Mugabe’s 82nd birthday next month, a state-controlled newspaper reported on Friday. The long-time Zimbabwean leader’s official birthday celebrations are to be held in the eastern Manicaland province, the Manica Post reported.

The book by the award-winning children’s author promises readers ”high adventure, dramatic tensions and all the swashbuckling, danger and derring-do they can handle”.

Chad Campbell will never be confused for a celebrity, but the easy-going golfer was thrust into the midst of three rock stars at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. It didn’t appear to affect his play as Campbell had the third-lowest round of the day, a six-under-par 66 that put him in the lead at 15-under 129 after the second round.
