NGOs to be rewarded for innovative websites

The Southern African NGO Network (Sangonet) will be hosting its first-ever NGO Web Awards in conjunction with its second annual ICTs for Civil Society conference in March this year — and NGOs have less than a month to enter. Sangonet aims to encourage NGOs to use the internet as a communication and advocacy tool.

Exchange controls ‘to be relaxed gradually’

The National Treasury is unlikely to deviate from the path it has pursued since 1995, one of gradually dismantling exchange controls in a phased and responsible manner, despite speculation that the government may opt for a "big bang" approach to lifting remaining exchange-control regulations, Brait economist Colen Garrow said on Friday.

JSE higher on global markets

The JSE on Friday climbed to a fresh all-time high on positive sentiment from the previous day’s trade as well as higher metals prices and international equity markets. By 12.15pm, the all-share index added 0,89% and the all-share industrial gained 0,75%. Financials climbed 0,59% and resources climbed 1,21%.

Overnight leaders drop out of Dusi

The unexpected exit with a damaged boat of overnight leaders Len Jenkins and Michael Mbanjwa on Friday turned the second day of the Hansa Powerade Dusi Canoe Marathon on its head. Their withdrawal left the door open for defending champions Hank McGregor and Martin Dreyer to consolidate their lead going into the final-day run.

Study says stress at work can lead to heart disease

No one is particularly surprised that a stressful day at work raises blood pressure, but a new study in Britain suggests that on-the-job tension also can lead to heart disease and diabetes. A study of more than 10 000 British civil servants over a 14-year period has found a possible biological explanation for why workplace stress adversely effects health.

Soul pioneer Pickett dies of heart attack

Wilson Pickett, the soul pioneer best known for the fiery hits Mustang Sally and In The Midnight Hour, died of a heart attack in a Reston, Virginia, hospital, his management company said. He was 64. Pickett died on Thursday after having suffered from health problems for the past year, said Chris Tuthill of the management company Talent Source.

SA economy ‘can grow much faster’

The South African economy is capable of growing much faster than it has in the past, a panel of experts told a group of government ministers in Pretoria on Thursday. The panel comprised economic and political experts from Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of London.
