Gunmen mounted on speedboats stormed a riverside oil facility in the southern Nigerian city of Port Harcourt on Tuesday and opened fire on the police, killing several of them, a witness said. An oil industry security source said that reports indicated that seven policemen and two civilian workers, including an expatriate, had been killed.

The transitional government in the Democratic Republic of Congo has wasted no time in moving from the chaotic but successful constitutional referendum last month to full-blown elections by the end of April. Results released recently show that 62% of the 25-million registered voters turned out in the referendum, delivering a resounding 84% vote in favour of the new basic law.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has yet to receive a complaint by the Democratic Alliance about its handling of the Oilgate scandal, spokesperson Makhosini Nkosi said on Monday. ”When the said complaint is brought to the NPA’s attention, it will be given due consideration on the basis of its merits,” he said.

Alec Smith, the rebellious son of the former prime minister of white-ruled Rhodesia, died of a heart attack at London’s Heathrow airport, family friends said on Sunday. He was 57. Smith suffered the attack at the airport on Thursday as he headed home to Zimbabwe.

Brooding American method actor Anthony Franciosa, who was once married to Oscar-winning screen star Shelley Winters, has died, just five days after his famous ex-wife, his publicist said on Friday. Franciosa, who was 77, died on Thursday in a hospital in Los Angeles.

Janette Carter, the last surviving child of country music’s founding Carter family, who in recent years preserved her parents’ old-time style with weekly performances, has died. She was 82. Family members said Carter, who had battled Parkinson’s disease and other illnesses, was taken to the hospital on Tuesday.
