Drug firms could ‘destroy effect of malaria pills’

The World Health Organisation warned pharmaceutical companies on Thursday that they risked destroying the effectiveness of the drug which has brought fresh hope to millions of people in the fight against malaria. Lee Jong-wook, the WHO’s director-general, told drug companies they must not market the drugs made from artemisinin except in combination with other, older malaria drugs.

Greenpeace ends protest against Japanese whalers

Environmental group Greenpeace on Friday said it had ended its pursuit of Japanese whalers in the Southern Ocean, which saw protesters attempt to put themselves between the harpoons and giant animals. The ships <i>Arctic Sunrise</i> and <i>Esperanza</i> will prepare to leave the region for Cape Town, the group said in a statement.

eBay scraps transaction fees in China

The United States online auction service eBay on Friday scrapped all sellers’ transaction fees in China, in an effort to compete with local competitors offering free services, including Yahoo-invested Alibaba.com. The move means that sellers won’t get paid until the buyers receive and are satisfied with the products, it said.

Hamas spends $180k on an image makeover

Hamas is paying a spin doctor  000 to persuade Europeans and Americans that it is not a group of religious fanatics who relish suicide bombings and hate Jews. The organisation, also known as the Islamic Resistance Movement, has hired a media consultant, Nashat Aqtash, to improve its image at home and abroad.
