Chad Campbell will never be confused for a celebrity, but the easy-going golfer was thrust into the midst of three rock stars at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. It didn’t appear to affect his play as Campbell had the third-lowest round of the day, a six-under-par 66 that put him in the lead at 15-under 129 after the second round.

Maria Sharapova and Andy Roddick pressed all the right buttons on Friday to motor into the Australian Open fourth round, but Lindsay Davenport again misfired before getting back on track. The Russian world number four is coming good at the right time, seemingly untroubled by the blisters that hobbled her in the second round.

Iraqi authorities on Friday said they were sealing off three provinces to prevent possible rebel attacks when final general election results are announced later in the day, Iraqiya state television reported. The three provinces concerned — Diyala, Salaheddin and Anbar — are heavily populated by the country’s Sunni Arab minority whose leaders have complained of fraud in the December 15 elections.
