More than 500 relocated after floods damage homes

With more than 500 people relocated because of rain damage to their shacks, Johannesburg’s emergency services has urged people living near water lines and crossing low-lying bridges to exercise caution. Some residents of Klipspruit, Alexandra, Diepsloot, Ennerdale and Kaya Sands had been moved, Gauteng Provincial Services said on Thursday.

Rwanda seeks priest’s extradition for genocide trial

Rwandan authorities have demanded the extradition of a Catholic priest exiled in France who is suspected of participating in the country’s 1994 genocide, officials said on Thursday. Kigali has asked Paris to hand over Father Wenceslas Munyeshyaka, the former vicar of the capital’s Holy Family parish, to face trial for his alleged role in the 100-day killing spree between April and June 1994.

Vendors ‘victimised’ by Zim market ban

Human rights lawyers in Zimbabwe on Thursday slammed the authorities’ closure of a popular Harare fruit and vegetable market on public health grounds, saying informal vendors were being victimised. Earlier this week, Harare’s state-appointed commission announced the closure of Mbare Musika market amid reports of increasing cases of cholera in Zimbabwe.

Two under-performing Soweto schools to be merged

The Gauteng Department of Education has merged two under-performing schools, Altem Secondary and Orlando Secondary in Orlando, Soweto, it said in a statement on Thursday. The new school will be located at the Orlando Secondary School premises. The step was taken to ”better utilise resources at these schools to ensure quality education”.

IMF to make new mission to Zimbabwe

A five-member delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is to arrive in Zimbabwe later this month as the Southern African country struggles to pay back about $146-million owed to the lending club, the finance minister said on Thursday. The IMF has threatened to expel Zimbabwe from its ranks for failing to pay back loans since 2001 and has given the country until February to settle its accounts.
