Link Wray, the legendary United States guitarist who was a pioneering, if often under-appreciated, figure in rock’n’roll, has died aged 76 at his home in Copenhagen, according to his official website. Wray was once named by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time.

A pair of lucky turkeys will receive the traditional Thanksgiving pardon from President George Bush on the White House lawn on Tuesday and then fly — in style, mind you — to Disneyland. They will be part of Disneyland’s holiday display and serve as honorary grand marshals for the theme park’s annual Thanksgiving-Day Parade.

Cape Town motor mechanic Alan Gietzmann was on Tuesday found guilty of the premeditated murder of his teenaged girlfriend Caryn Lindesay. He was also convicted on five counts of incitement to rape or murder her. Cape High Court Judge Denis van Reenen said Gietzmann faces a ”very, very severe” penalty.

On becoming Germany’s new Chancellor on Tuesday, Angela Merkel joined a club of women leaders whose members can still literally be counted on the fingers of one hand. Along with leaders such as Helen Clark of New Zealand and Begum Khaleda Zia of Bangladesh, Merkel is henceforth one of only five women worldwide to head their country’s government.

Zimbabwe’s financially troubled national airline has resumed flights after the company’s entire fleet was temporarily grounded due to lack of fuel, state radio reported on Tuesday. Hundreds of passengers were left stranded at Harare International airport on Monday.

The JSE is planning to list next year. The stock exchange said on Tuesday it believes that listing the bourse is appropriate. The JSE board has also authorised the JSE executive to finalise a proposal to shareholders to implement a broad-based black economic empowerment (BEE) initiative to demonstrate further its support of BEE.

At least nine of the University of South Africa’s (Unisa) top 28 officials earn considerably more than President Thabo Mbeki does — including his car allowance. At least 19 of the 28 earn more than Mbeki, excluding the allowance, Minister of Education Naledi Pandor has revealed in Parliament.

More than a million South Africans registered to vote in next year’s municipal elections during the Independent Electoral Commission’s final registration drive over the weekend. This brings to 21-million the number of South Africans now on the voters’ roll. The country has a population of 43-million to 44-million.

Over the next few months, more than 10-million hungry people in six Southern African countries will need Western help to stay alive after their crops failed earlier this year. A massive humanitarian effort is under way, led by the United Nations’s World Food Programme. But in southern Zambia, one of the worst hit of the regions most affected by this year’s unreliable rains, some families will not get food.
