Joe Slovo fire leaves hundreds homeless

About 100 families were affected when their shacks were destroyed in a fire that swept through the Joe Slovo informal settlement in Johannesburg on Saturday night. ”How must I find the strength to start all over again?” said James Phosa, a resident who was injured when the same area was razed to the ground in 2001.

Zenawi shows violent streak

An uneasy calm holds in Addis Ababa this week as Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi feels the weight of his triple-decker troubles. The death toll from a week of violent demonstrations in the capital against the alleged rigging of elections nearly six months ago approaches 50. The opposition has called for a week-long strike and the police presence in the city has been increased dramatically.

Jordan’s fragile calm destroyed

At least 57 people were killed and more than 100 injured when suicide bombers blew themselves up at three hotels in Amman, the capital of Jordan, on Wednesday night. The hotels — the Grand Hyatt, Radisson SAS and Days Inn — were popular with foreigners and many of the guests were involved in work in Iraq.

Senegal still unbeaten against SA

Senegal extended their unbeaten streak against South Africa to three matches as they controversially won 3-2 in the Nelson Mandela Cup played at the Epru Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Saturday. However, South Africa produced a near-flawless and clinical performance.

Trumpets and drums for Zuma

Axed deputy president Jacob Zuma appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Saturday. He was formally served with an indictment. Earlier on Saturday, hundreds of people danced and sang to the sounds of trumpets and drums outside the court as they prepared for Zuma’s arrival.

African women on Friday acclaimed Liberia’s Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf as a beacon of greater influence for their sex and a source of new hope for peace in a continent wracked by male-dominated conflict. Activists hailed the presidential vote in favour of Johnson-Sirleaf, who held an unbeatable lead in the West African state.
