Spain and Morocco meet to discuss border unrest

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero met his Moroccan counterpart Driss Jettou for talks on illegal immigration on Thursday following another night of deadly unrest at a border-crossing between the two countries. The summit was to address joint efforts to contain illegal immigration, as well as the situation in the former Spanish colony of Western Sahara.

London lands Olympic marketing coup

London are banking on a cash bonanza from the 2012 Olympics after gaining the support from the man who helped write the International Olympic Committee (IOC) marketing handbook. Michael Payne, who helped mastermind the IOC’s rise to a billion dollar business has agreed in principle to join London 2012 as a special consultant.

Golds and platinum lift JSE

The JSE was in positive territory in noon trade on Thursday with higher precious metals prices boosting gold and platinum stocks. The bourse was nevertheless off its record high of 16 770,561 reached in early trade. By 12.06pm, the all share index was up 0,22% at 16 674,7.

Long-term insurance industry in good shape

The long-term insurance industry is in good health with the industry now managing assets in excess of R913-billion for the year to June 2005, a 19% increase on the year before, the Life Offices Association said on Thursday. The total new business premium inflow was up 14% on the comparable six month period in 2004, to R21-billion.

Oil prices rise amid refinery worries

World oil prices pushed upwards on Thursday as the market focus remained on United States refineries, many of which are struggling to restart production after recent hurricanes in the US Gulf of Mexico. New York’s main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in November, added seven cents to ,42 per barrel in electronic trading.
