‘Can’t chat now, I’m being arrested’

FBI agents arrested a woman on Tuesday who was suspected of robbing four banks in suburban Virginia while appearing to be talking on a cellphone. Candice Martinez (19) was arrested just before 4am at a home in nearby Centreville, Virginia after an FBI agent spotted a car nearby with licence plates they had been searching for.

Gambler sues casino that let him lose

A ruined French gambler on Monday sued a casino for failing to prevent him losing his money. Jean-Philippe Bryk (44) claimed the Grand Cafe casino in the spa town of Vichy owed him a duty of ”information, advice and loyalty”. Bryk won about €16 000 on his first two visits in 1995, but lost nearly € 742 810 over the next eight years.

Ethiopia holds 5 400 over deadly riots

Ethiopian police are still holding about 5 400 people detained during deadly street riots early this month over alleged electoral fraud in May’s legislative elections, the country’s police chief said on Tuesday. Federal Police Comissioner Workneh Gedeyhu explained that 3 858 people were released on Monday.

Israel, Palestine agree on border deal

United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice announced on Tuesday an Israeli-Palestinian deal to open critical border crossings in the Gaza Strip, capping a tense, round-the-clock burst of personal diplomacy. Rice said the two sides have resolved outstanding issues, particularly on the key Rafah terminal between Gaza and Egypt.
