A man who served as Rwanda’s interior minister during the slaughter of more than half-a-million people in 1994 pleaded not guilty on Monday to three counts of genocide and crimes against humanity. Calixte Kalimanzira surrendered on Tuesday to the United Nations tribunal for the alleged masterminds of the 100-day genocide.

”What rape?” asked the headline of the Sowetan on Monday, in a report on allegations that former deputy president Jacob Zuma sexually assaulted a family friend staying over at his house. ”What can be inferred from all this is that it points to a witch-hunt,” Zuma’s lawyer, Michael Hulley, told the Herald.

Claiming her marriage has — literally — gone to the dogs, or at least to one in particular, an Israeli woman is demanding her husband pay her alimony since he devotes more attention to the family Dobermann than to her. Media reports said that in a claim the 39-year-old woman submitted via her attorney, she says the Dobermann ”is the centre of the husband’s life”.

South Africa’s Ryk Neethling emerged as the star of the first leg of the Fina World Cup series in Durban on Sunday. Neethling claimed two more golds to take his total for the last three days to six golds out of six races contested. On Saturday he added the 50m butterfly (23,33) and the 200m freestyle (1:44,47) titles to his haul.

Election-chastened California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on Sunday left for China on a six-day visit aimed at boosting trade and investment and battling movie piracy, officials said. The action movie hero, who was dealt the bitterest defeat of his political career last week when voters rejected referendum measures on which he had staked his reputation, will visit Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

United States racer Kurt Busch was suspended by Roush Racing on Sunday for the final two races of the US stock car season after being charged with reckless driving on Friday. Busch was detained by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota, who was admitted to Cape Town’s Gatesville Medical Centre last week after a heart attack, was transferred to Two Military Hospital on Sunday. Earlier on Sunday, ANC Western Cape chairperson James Ngculu said Lekota was in high spirits when an ANC delegation visited him at the Gatesville Medical Centre.

Great Britain’s Nigel Mansell edged out Brazilian Emerson Fittipaldi by a fraction of a second to win the inaugural South African Grand Prix Masters at the Kyalami race track north of Johannesburg on Sunday. Mansell was pushed all the way by his fellow former Formula 1 World Champion and crossed the line in a time of 50 minutes 55,154 seconds.
