Increased interaction of warders with prisoners is important in pre-empting gang attacks and other gang-related activity in prisons, a study released on Monday reveals. The Department of Correctional Services is looking at issues such as staffing levels and the provision of equipment at a representative 36 prisons around the country.

Police have refused to confirm reports of pending arrests linked to an unregistered mortuary in the Leigh Matthews kidnapping and murder case. In his trial, murderer Donovan Moodley denied keeping Matthews’s body on ice for several days before dumping it in a veld in Walkerville — despite expert evidence to the contrary.

Johannesburg’s bid for the 2010 Gay Games was as solid as a rock, but despite all the bid committee’s efforts, the Games will be hosted by Cologne, Germany. Disappointed members of the Johannesburg bid commission were in Chicago for the announcement and listened to the Federation of Gay Games decision on Sunday.

South Africa’s broadband consumer lobby group MyADSL on Friday said Telkom’s new ADSL pricing structure would result in local subscribers paying 1Â 000% more than other subscribers around the globe for a similar service. The new billing structure, introduced on November 1, is on a per-usage system.

Three Telkom executives who objected to the appointment of chief executive Papi Molotsane have left the company. Molotsane made the announcement on Monday at the presentation of Telkom’s results for the six months ended September 30. Telkom’s net profit for the six months to September 30 was R4,2-billion.

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas said on Monday that an Israeli-Palestinian deal on reopening the Gaza-Egypt border is imminent, following talks with United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. ”We have discussed issues relevant to the Gaza Strip in order to avoid transforming the Gaza Strip into a big prison,” Abbas said.

Côte d’Ivoire’s government has begun rebuilding its air force, one year after it was mostly destroyed by French forces in retaliation for an air raid that killed nine French soldiers, a United Nations report says. The report says it is unclear whether the attempt to rebuild the air force is in violation of an arms embargo.
